My passion is helping business owners increase their revenue and pay themselves more. More revenue and more owner’s pay only comes from understanding business finances and making sound decisions from a place of financial knowledge. Not all businesses are ready for my fractional CFO services, so I like to offer other options to meet the needs of all business levels!
There are three stages of CFO involvement in the business. The goal of most companies is to move through all three stages because that means that the business is growing and scaling.
Let’s break down all three stages:
Do It Yourself CFO

A business is likely in this phase when revenue is between $0-$250K. The company is usually set up as a solopreneur or has a small team. This business probably has a bookkeeper and a tax person, but they do not have a strategic financial person focused on planning for the future. The CEO or business owner is making all the financial decisions on their own, and those decisions are more about day-to-day finances, not long-term strategic planning.
At this level of business, financial decision-making can be reactionary. Often, the CEO pays themselves very little or sometimes nothing at all. While every company goes through this phase, many stay here because they do not have a financial strategy to grow and scale and move into the next stage, which is “done with you” CFO services. If you are in this phase and want to know our favorite resource for help, jump down to the “DIY Resources” section near the end of this blog. You don’t want to miss this once-a-year opportunity! We want to see you grow into the next phase of financial services: Done With You.
Done with You CFO Services
4 Corners CFO works primarily with companies in this phase of business. Revenue is usually in the mid to high six figures, and the CEO is ready to scale and grow strategically. At this level, a fractional CFO serves as a team member who works in partnership with the decision-maker in the business. We are there to provide reliable information and analysis, bounce ideas off of, plan strategically for the future, hold you accountable to your goals, and pull all the financial aspects of the business together.
Instead of spending countless hours each month on business finance, our clients may spend an hour with us in a strategy meeting. In that meeting, we discuss the financial data and strategic plan that will move their business forward to the next goal.
We adore this level because it is where businesses really hit their stride. They have a market-tested product or service, consistent (not necessarily consistent amounts but consistently being generated) revenue, and the desire to plan strategically for their financial future. Some companies reach this level and are happy staying right here forever, while others move toward the last phase: done for you CFO services.
Done For You CFO Services
Once a business gets into the ten to fifteen million dollars per year revenue mark, it is time to hire a full-time CFO. At this level, the CFO is genuinely the main financial decision-maker in the business. They are managing the financial health and strategy of the company and likely oversee an entire financial department.
DIY Resources
Most 4 Corners CFO clients fall into the middle category, but we also speak to many business owners

I like that you discussed the importance of having a chief financial officer mostly for startups because this would help a new business manage its finances with the help of an expert. A friend of mine has a new start-up company and is looking for a CFO service to help them manage their finances. Thank you for this informative article, I will surely tell him that there are lots of fractional CFO services in the market where he could inquire and ask questions.
